About Us

The Black Advisory Substance Use Committee (BASUC) is leading the charge against substance use and addiction within Colorado’s African American community. As substance use-related deaths continue to rise, BASUC was formed to address the unique challenges our community faces.

We are committed to reducing risk, promoting early diagnosis, and fostering long-term recovery and wellness. Through collaboration with healthcare professionals, non-profits, community leaders, and state authorities, we develop culturally sensitive and impactful strategies that make a real difference.

BASUC’s five-year state plan outlines a proactive approach to tackling substance abuse. We aim to:

• Educate and Empower: Raise awareness and build knowledge about substance use and mental health.
• Develop Policies and Mobilize Partnerships: Advocate for policies that prioritize health equity and community support.
• Assure a Competent Workforce: Equip healthcare professionals with the skills needed to serve African American communities effectively.
• Monitor and Evaluate: Continuously assess the impact of our efforts to ensure progress and accountability.

Substance use and addiction disproportionately affect African American communities in Colorado, leading to severe social, economic, and health challenges. National data shows higher rates of illicit drug use and unmet treatment needs among African Americans compared to other groups. Additionally, barriers such as stigma, bias, and a shortage of culturally competent providers exacerbate the crisis.
